Modern society requires modernization of the traditional electricity grid through philosophies that provide potential for adapting novel features on day-to-day operations in the power system. According to the vision of Horizon Europe 2021 – 2027, the next-generation electric system will be a “smart grid”, which constitute intelligent infrastructure in smart cities, provide reliable, energy-efficient, and high-quality power to improve the standard of living while maintaining a sustainable environment.

The course program is designed for proving a new energy–related curriculum to the students with leading-edge technologies in the domain of smart grids. This course focusing on the fundamental architecture of the smart grids addressing the sustainability issue considering the penetration of renewable energy and energy storage as distributed energy resources (DERs) for the future electricity grid. The course provides utility level analysis in terms of energy management, energy market participation, and optimization of renewable energy on urban microgrids according to several objectives (e.g., cost, sizing, emission) on multi-level applications from smart homes to smart cities.
